Fresno Garden Tours
Fresno Garden Tour (Standard tour): The tour begins at 10:00 AM and we return you to your location at 4:00 PM. The day starts from your location in Fresno. We take you to the Japanese garden where we will be met by a docent who will escort us through the gardens. Pre-arrangement is necessary to enjoy this special place. Sometimes we can get a close up of the Tea House. The gardens are beautiful any time of year but are especially beautiful March through May. Admission is free, however donations are accepted and welcomed. Next, we travel to a unique underground garden, a jewel of Fresno. The owner found the top layer of soil to be ‘hardpan’ which is nutrient poor, so he started digging and found fertile soil below. He planted various fruit trees below ground and had wonderful harvests which could be picked from ground level. He continued to dig passageways and completed 2 bedrooms, kitchen, bath, pond, driveway and other features underground before his death. With advance notice we may be able to arrange private tours.
Schedule is seasonal March through November.
We end our journey at Fig Garden for a unique shopping and dining experience. There’s plenty of time to browse the stores and select a restaurant in which to enjoy excellent foods before we return you to your starting point.
Optional: Build your own tour by selecting an Herb and Lavender Garden with sample tasting and browse the gift shop for unique gifts, a water-wise demonstration botanical garden nearby or the Garden of the Sun which includes demonstration garden, cactus garden which is especially beautiful during April & May.

When he travelled from Sicily to America in 1901, Baldassare Forestiere did not yet know he was going to build his home under the Fresno Ground, near what is now Shaw Avenue, two blocks away from highway 99. His life-long dedication to his unusual project yielded the amazing Underground Gardens of Fresno.
The Gardens were designed with no plans, and the self-taught Forestiere found the most efficient and natural way to beat the hot summers of the Central Valley when he decided to build his home like catacombs for the living: a well lit grotto, an intricate network of tunnels with planted trees and crops of all sorts, directly under the sun, which provided him shade, colorful light, food and a lovely view… all underground. Come and see this uniquely odd, fascinating, lovely and surprisingly comfortable home below the sun beaten summers of Fresno.
